Hong Wen ESL Course Plan

 

Levels

 

Here in Hong Wen High School, we group students into small-size classes according to their English proficiency.

 

The ESL levels from high to low are Advanced, Intermediate, Basic, Elementary and Pre-Elementary.

 

Textbooks

 

Textbook use is designed by levels or/and purposes. The CLIL/All Skilled Course focuses more on reading and writing, whereas the Communication Course specifically stresses on listening and oral skills.

Exegetical (Listening/Reading) Performance Definitions

Pre-Elementary

Advanced

Identify the general topic and some basic information on familiar and everyday contexts from memorized words and phrases.

Understand the main idea and some pieces of detailed information on familiar topics from simple sentences and formulaic grammar.

Understand the main idea and supporting details on a wide variety of familiar general topics from various time frames in complex sentences.

Interpret and infer meaning from semi-complex, academic, or even professional information from unfamiliar topics in complex sentences. 

 

 

Presentational (Speaking/Writing) Performance Definitions

Advanced

Present info on familiar and everyday topics using memorized words, phrases, or simple sentences.

Communicate Info, make presentations, and express thoughts about familiar/everyday topics using simple connected sentences.

Deliver detailed and organized presentations on familiar, but also unfamiliar concrete topics in paragraphs and using various time frames.

Deliver extended presentations on somewhat abstract or hypothetical situations from general interests with precision of expression to a wide audience type.

 

Interpersonal (Conversational) Performance Definitions

Advanced

Communicate in spontaneous conversation on familiar and everyday topics using memorized words, phrases, and simple sentences.

Participate in spontaneous conversations on familiar topics, creating simple connected sentences to ask/answer many questions.

Maintain spontaneous conversation and discussion across various time frames on familiar, but also unfamiliar topics using complex connected sentences.

Participate fully and effectively in spontaneous discussion or debate on somewhat abstract or hypothetical situations including supporting arguments and evidence.
